Swordplay and Storyboarding
I hate exercise. Getting to the gym and pumping iron, running, I hate it. Why? It feels like a job. And its boaring. BUT WAIT!!! theres something better. Swordfighting combine cardio with strength training and you can't get bored when steel is being swung at you. So I love exercising now. I've been fencing for 13 yrs now all types, olympic three weapon, rapier dagger, broadsword, kendo. Its a blast and peels off the pounds. Larsen ( the guy featured opposite me in the photos) is my workout pal and he is just learning but gives me a run for the money. below are photos of broadsword action but I will post Rapier action as well. We wear armor while rapier fighting and go full tilt. Its awesome.
Oh yeah by the way PIXAR is looking for board artists so get your portfolios in asap!!!!
Fighting after lunch
Proper stance is important( notice Larsen and I have switched to Rapiers)
Typical ward ( typical on lookers)
broadsword in action
more broadsword action
Larsen and me fighting on Skye- were all the great celtic warriors trained ( so what if we're using plastic swords)

Do you have a claymoor too!? man am I jealous. I used to be a member of the SCA but they got too weird for me. Maybe I'll start up something like this.
Chan ann leis a’chiad bhuille thuiteas a’chraobh.
It is not with the first stroke that the tree falls.
Words to live by.
I do have a claymore- basket hilt and two handed. SCA huh....there was a time they weren't weird??? I d give my arm to get into one of those huge melee's they do. Two armys charging each other.....what a rush.
You totally should start up something like this. There are sword schools poping up all over it seems like.
Ya hiya chowhada!!!!
Arakeen for- Long live the fighters- dune

There's a fencing school sort of near where I live, in Burbank. I'm always thinking about checking it out...
There can be only one. Mark you work is incredable, I really like the new
Dartangion stuff, the aireal move where he chops off the arm is the coolest thing ive seen in a long time.
I am in mike tracy's class, you worked with him on iron giant. I have him for background and layout. I was wondering if from time to time i can ask you some advice on drawing, i need it. i have finished two years of school now one more to go.
ps i'm crushed i didn't get to swordplay with you in scotland!!!!!!! What about the robin hood sword fight, was not the best ever??!!!come on man!
Marmax----- Swordplay is a great school i used to fence there for years. there is also Swords on glendale ave and olive- tigran is the instructor there and is amazing ( my old coach) go have fun
Idiot Circus boy----if you're having issues with nail cutters than absolutley do not play with large bladed weapons. As for the Pixar site. it should have info. inters are avilable but in summer only. good luck
Hojlander---- ask away man i'll be honest and forthcoming with any help I can offer. As for best sword fights on screen ever Robin Hood is okay but you have to check out Scaramouche- 9 minute dule.Awesome.
haha, that's really cool! Thanks for posting these. Its looks like it's fun as hell, probably just as difficult, too!
That is extremely cool...
I remember some time back, reading this article about famous swords in movies.
Here's a list of a few of my personal favorites:
-Green Destiny from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
-The Power Sword from He-Man
-Narsil/Anduril and Sting from LOTR
-The Samurai swords in Kill Bill
-All kinds of Lightsabers.
-Arthur's sword in Disney's The Sword in the Stone.
-Mai's sword in Sin City.
-Morpheus's sword in The Matrix Reloaded.
But my all-time favorite would be the plastic telescoping lance that I got when I was 8. It was bright and multicolored but gave me a lot of joy!
-Rohit
I used to practice this sort of thing with foam wrapped swords years ago and loved every minute of it.
Glad you're loving it!
Looks like loads of fun Mark the only thing that comes close to that for me would be when I was growing up in Trinidad and we'd make them out of wood e old fashion style you know the up side down cross but I would always try to crave mine up a bit add some designs kool stuff like that. thanks for sharing the info about story board artist can super fresh rookie's apply as well. hope the weekend is good to u take care!!!
Looks like loads of fun!
Mark, you are the craziest, coolest MOFO I know!!! Just make sure you don't hurt yer storyboarding arm! It was good chatting with you at work a few weeks ago. I'll see you in a few months!
marksan did you eat fried mars bars in scotland????it is the official candy of the god of war
your bro and i are doing another comic he's back in the saddle dude
nice to see you can stab people at Pixar too. A very helpful thing to do in the animation industry.
Dave----- it is fun and difficult but thats the fun. more ta' come
Rohit---- My light sabre was a broken off broom handle painted blue. A movie you have to watch for awesome sword action is SCARAMOUCHE longest sword fight ever.
UrbanBarbarian---- I love it. Ive been doing it for almost 16 yrs. much fun, cant get enough
St John Street----- carve it up , like adding magical runes and stuff. Totally did the same thing. After me and my brothers watched conan when kids we'd go outside and swing pipes around doing the Conan sword Kata. Boys will be boys.
Bobby Chiu---- it is!!!
chris chua---- surely not the coolest, but if so you need to get out more man. It was great seeing you. when you get here I'll teach you the noble way of steel!!!
hojlander--- it is not the offical candy of the god of war, i know cause i am the god of war. And i like M&M's. and no I didnt eat a mars bar fried. Another comic eh? awesome. can't wait.
MisterZoobadoo------ its a great place to work. Pixar is very accomidating. and as for a helpful thing in the industry is concerned.... it has its benefits.

Hey!!! That looks like fun!!!
Ever try any Chinese or Korean sword forms?
SCOTLAND? The Western Isles? Damn.
I really, really want to go to Mull, Iona and Skye baaaaadly. Only ever been to Edinburgh(I first wrote "Edinborough", ah, well, that's how it's said, right?). You lucky so and so. The fencing sure looks like a hoot(I know it's a workout; my brother does fencing--yikes. I can take about 5 minutes).
Ha! Look at Brian go! You're okay too Mandrews. :-P And I totally agree with your thought about working out.
I was just reminicing the other day about the stage combat class I took with you and I wanted to thank you for teaching me how to do the dive roll. I use it every day when I get to work. BTW do you know what A.C. is doing?? He was one of the cooler teachers at CalArts.
RoboTaeKwon-Z------- very little. like them very much. I mean most sword forms don't think about guys attacking you from behind.
Jenny----- I highly recommend anywhere in Scotland. Mull and Iona are etherial places but you gotta check out Harris and Lewis as well. Hell ALL of Scotland
Skribbl---- I'm glad the dive roll comes in handy. I don't know what AC is doing but I think his wife is on BattleStar Galactica as Col. Paul Tighs wife!!!
